  • Overview

    As a Principal Engineer (Laser/Optical) at Solta Medical, the successful candidate will help create our next generation of world-leading energy-based aesthetic products.  With a focus on all aspects of Laser/Optical energy delivery, the candidate is expected to conceive, research, design, and release products into production that will define the industry. As a member of Solta Medical technical staff, the Principal/Senior Engineer is expected to assist with innovative technical solutions using their knowledge and experience of Laser/Optical Engineering.  Specifically, to assist the Energy-Based Devices department in the R&D of current/future devices that are Laser/Optical based. The individual must be versatile with the practical as well as the theoretical aspects of Laser/Optical based Medical Devices.


    Note: The following are meant to be representative but not necessarily all inclusive of the duties and responsibilities for this position title.


    Design energy based medical devices utilizing laser/optical energy for non-invasive/minimally invasive body contouring and aesthetic dermatology applications.

    Perform device simulations and analysis of prototype systems.
    Implement designs and build prototypes.
    Perform laboratory measurements and analysis using state of the art instrumentation to verify simulated models.
    upport animal and laboratory studies of prototype systems for feasibility studies.
    Document results of simulations, measurements, and analysis in a form of technical reports.
    Prepare and present results of the research to the department staff and to other internal customers.

    Develop product design specifications, technical reports, and documents in accordance with company, ISO-9001, FDA, and other requirements.

    Participate in reliability testing of overall systems.
    Research and analyze data such as customer requests and specifications to determine feasibility of designs.
    Work closely with other departments to ensure projects conform to all regulatory and quality regulations.
    Interface with electrical, mechanical, and software resources as part of a cross-disciplinary design team.

    Provide engineering support for Manufacturing and Service related activities.


    • MS in any Engineering or Scientific discipline(s) related to Laser and/or Optical Engineering is required, PhD is highly desirable.
    • Experimental and theoretical experience with fiber, diode, pulse dye lasers and/or IPL (Intense Pulse Light) devices.
    • Experience with laboratory equipment associated with Laser and/or Optical energy measurements.
    • Experience with software tools (i.e. Visual Basic, MATLAB, etc.).
    • Working knowledge of one of the following: COMSOL, ZEMAX, CODE V, and/or LightTools software.
    • Working knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical CAD software is desired.
    • Laboratory and/or Clinical experience with the mechanism of action in tissue due to exposure of Laser and/or Optical energy modalities.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment that includes hardware, software, RF, and mechanical engineers as well as project managers.
      •Skilled in problem definition, data collection and analysis, generating solid conclusions and recommendations.
      •Ability to multi-task, and capable of executing multiple assignments on time.
    • Five plus years of industry experience is highly desirable. However, recent college graduates with relevant academic experience are encouraged to apply.


    Language and Verbal Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering specifications, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, specifications, business correspondences, and procedure manuals in English.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers. Ability to clearly and concisely convey project accomplishments, obstacles, issues, and project status.



    Math Skills

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to perform calculations and interpret project results/data. 


    Analytical and Reading Skills

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical and/or diagram form and comprehend abstract/concrete variables.  Ability to read technical and clinical literature and documents and extract important concepts.


    Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to perform lifting tasks of up to 30 pounds for short durations. Duties of this job may involve standing and/or walking for extended periods of time. Duties also involve daily keyboard data entry. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.


    Work Environment

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Some work may be required to be performed in animal and clinical laboratories, where the employee must employ standard techniques to protect against chemical and biological hazards. Some light machining and prototyping activities may involve moderate noise levels (i.e. power drill) and moderate dust or debris exposure.
